Marion Swenson Kundiger was
born at home in Stoughton, Wisconsin on September 10, 1918, on her
grandmother's birthday . . . Izzie's mother's birthday. She grew
up in Stoughton.
She had one older brother, Orrin.
Marion was a tomboy who loved to play imagination games, swim, ride bicycles, and ice skate. She and three other girls started the first Girl Scout troop in her home town with her father's help, following his example when he started the first Boy Scout troop there. She earned a bachelor's degree in medical technology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and worked in that field until after her 1943 marriage to Donald G. Kundiger, a chemist from Wisconsin. They lived in Philadelphia and San Francisco before moving to Manhattan, Kansas in 1949. Dr. Kundiger was on the organic chemistry faculty at Kansas State University there until his death in 1960. Marion has four children, Geraldine (Jerri), born in San Francisco in 1947; Donovan (1949), Lannay (1952) and Sherie (1954), all born in Manhattan, Kansas. She has ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Marion earned a teaching degree in biological sciences and a Masters degree in microbiology at Kansas State University and taught high school and college biology in Muskego, Wisconsin and at Kansas State University before her retirement at the age of 70. She lived in Manhattan, Kansas until June 2006, when she moved to Sun City Center, Florida. Travel is one of her passions, and she has visited over 40 countries, including Antarctica, where she enjoyed photographing penguins. She has been scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, shooting the rapids in Africa, and climbed the pyramids in Mexico and went down inside the ones in Egypt. She is an accomplished photographer, and she likes to write
nonfiction.
She is currently working on books about bamboo and about modern-day
people who live in cave homes.
