What influenced you to become a librarian, or to work in a library?

From the time I was a preschooler, libraries are places I loved and gravitated to.  In retrospect, becoming a librarian was natural.

Do you have a library/information science degree?

I have an MLS from Southern Connecticut State University.

What kinds of library positions have you held and where?

I have worked in computer research, public library, public and private school libraries.

How long were you, or have you been, a librarian? On and off for thirty years.

Are you currently working as a librarian and do you plan to continue in the profession?  No.

If not, why did you leave it?  To write full time.

Which came first in your life, your work or career as a librarian, or writing for children?  Writing for children.

Did your library work have anything to do with becoming a children's writer?

Both share a deep love of books.

Did your library work directly influence your work as an author?

Not directly, but it  was always the background support.

What were the greatest benefits of being a librarian to you as a writer?  Contact with kids and books.

Were there any drawbacks to being a librarian and also a writer?  No.

If you wrote while working as as librarian, how did you manage the time-juggling act? How did your employment impact on how much you wrote and when you did it?

Writing took second place in the demand on my time and energy.

How did your library/school administration and colleagues view your authorship?  Was it appreciated and encouraged?  Were the library patrons/students aware of your writing?

The writing was appreciated and encouraged. The students are intrigued.

Do you feel that librarianship has/had specific benefits to you as a writer? If so, what are/were they?  Research.

Are there any other comments you would like to make about librarianship and writing for children?

To reach kids, to involve them in reading, in stories, in facts, and ideas is personally very gratifying and educationally significant.
