| What Bettye Stroud has to say about
her career as an author and librarian:
An elderly great-uncle of mine loved books and reading, and he read to me during my early years. I grew up knowing I wanted to work with children and books and reading. I earned a B.S. degree in English with a minor in Library Science and took a job as a librarian in an elementary school where I loved the work. Later I earned M.Ed and Ed.Specialist degrees from the University of Georgia. During my career, I worked in only two elementary schools and retired a few years ago to spend more time with my then-new husband. Having always wanted to write a book, I joined a writers group and set to work. Years of involvement with the best writers and the best literature in the children's field gave me a wonderful background for my new venture. Because I had read thousands of books over the years, I knew the kind of stories I wanted to tell. And I felt I knew what children liked to read. I wanted my writing to be inspirational to kids who have faced the demons in their own lives that I write about in my books, to know that they are not alone. My work with children and libraries was invaluable here. have sold four books in the last few years, and I teach Writing For Children at the University of Georgia. But because I love that personal interaction with children, I spend a great deal of time visiting schools and libraries and inspiring children to read, to grow, and to dream.
